Chanel Dining Set

Chanel Dining Set

Black and Blooms

Here's a secret: You don't need an occasion to decorate your house for an occasion. A beautiful centerpiece is the icing on the cake in a dining room and the right centerpiece can hold its own all year long. Whether you're decorating a table for a dinner party or you just want an eye-catching centerpiece you can leave up all the time, no table is complete with a centerpiece.

Selecting the right table decor starts with a few decisions: Do you want something minimalist and low-key or are you going for a centerpiece that really sings? Do you find yourself reaching for natural blooms or oversized handmade pottery?

Here, we've rounded up some of our favorite centerpiece ideas that can stay up year-round. Read on for major dining table inspiration.

01 of 20

Keep It Rustic

Design: Katie Hodges Design

Photography: Amy Bartlam

A rustic kitchen or dining room doesn't have to feel old or overly country. Adorn your natural wood table with a bouquet of dried lavender and a handful of white linen napkins to give your dining table a French provincial touch.

Head to your local thrift store to find handmade pottery and vases for much less than a big box store (and with more charm).

02 of 20

Sprinkle Eucalyptus

Amy Leferink at Interior Impressions

Eucalyptus is the type of greenery we always want in our house. It's refreshing, offers a minimalist and modern vibe and it lasts so much longer than fresh floral blooms.

DIY a table runner with strands of eucalyptus and arrange a handful of candles or small vases throughout for a centerpiece that is beautiful enough for the holidays but simple enough for the rest of the year, too.

03 of 20

Opt for Dried Blooms

Ann Living

Tired of replacing your flowers every time they die? Instead, consider dried plants such as straw grass or pampas grass to adorn your dining room table. Though they may not give off any fragrance, they provide a lovely Scandi-inspired vibe in any home.

04 of 20

Try Large Jugs

Ashley Montgomery Design

Whether you fill them with flowers or keep them empty, large vintage jugs are perfect for decorating a simple table. This look pairs best with more understated furniture and decor, but the larger the pieces the better.

05 of 20

Go for Branches

Calimia Home

Sometimes you just need a centerpiece idea that takes up a lot of visual space without taking up a lot of physical space. Consider filling a vase with large sprigs of blooming trees such as magnolia or olive branches. Thin branches are subtle enough not to overwhelm the space, but large enough to create a statement at your dining table.

Keep It Simple

Charlie Interior Design

Sometimes the best centerpiece ideas are the simplest ones. A bowl of fruit doesn't have to feel like a stale idea, especially in a bold dining space where you don't want to take away from the rest of the decor.

07 of 20

Create a Collection

KG Designs

What's better than one vase in the center of your table? A few vases that can work together to create a beautiful display that feels purposeful and interesting. Find three or four similar (but slightly different) vases in a simple color palette to fill the center of a large table.

Add Sculptural Pieces

LeeAnn Baker Interiors LTD

Why not decorate your kitchen table with art? We love the idea of displaying a few beautiful sculptures as a centerpiece on a dining table to give your room a creative, artsy look and feel.

09 of 20

Don't Forget the Island

Design: R.Johnston

Photography: Sara Ligorria-Tramp

For many of us, the kitchen island is not just a place where you prep dinner, but it's also a space to serve meals, especially during dinner parties. Spruce up your breakfast bar or kitchen island with an oversized vase filled with blooms or greenery to give it a more formal feel.

10 of 20

Use a Potted Plant

LeClair Decor

If you have a green thumb (or honestly, even if you don't) you are probably always looking for an excuse to buy more houseplants. Instead of flowers, consider placing a potted plant at the center of your table to add a touch of green and liveliness to your space.

11 of 20

Splurge for Flowers

Design: Think Chic Interiors

Photography: Regan Wood

Sometimes there's simply no replacement for a bouquet of beautiful fresh flowers. An easy way to take your dining table from breakfast to party mode is by arranging a large bouquet at the center. Stick with one type of flower for a more modern look or try your hand at a floral arrangement to go bigger and bolder.

12 of 20

Fill the Table

M Starr Design

If your table is feeling a little empty, consider arranging sculptures or candles throughout the center to act as a more visually interesting runner. This adds a ton of visual interest and is a great way to fill a table if you're not actually using it but want it to shine.

13 of 20

Use a Large Bowl

Margaret Wright Interior + Lifestyle Photog

Take a spin by your local artisanal boutique and find a handmade bowl that can sit at the center of your dining table all year long and work as both a practical and a beautiful centerpiece.

14 of 20

Go for Repetition

Michelle Berwick Design

If one oversized vase is too formal for your table, opt for three or four mini vases and repeat the look a few times to create a repetition that is simple but beautiful.

15 of 20

Consider the Scale

Milk and Honey Life

Sometimes you need a large centerpiece to finish out a dining table. If you have a simple dining room or kitchen, an oversized vase or arrangement can act as a focal point and add a lot of texture to the room.

16 of 20

Add a Pop of Color

Modern House Vibes

Even if you love neutral color schemes, it's hard to deny that a pop of color can do wonders for any space. Weave in a bit of color in a handmade bowl or vase for an eye-catching centerpiece.

17 of 20

Create a Pairing

Sarah Fultz Interiors

While one beautiful vase can often stand alone, pairing two pieces together can create a bit more depth on your table. Instead of two pieces that match, pick opposite colors for contrast.

18 of 20

Go for Varying Heights

Sarah Fultz Interiors

A good rule of thumb is a large centerpiece should be taller than 24 inches, but you can mix up the look by sprinkling in a few pieces of varying heights. Add a tiered cake holder and fill it with fruit or florals or mix in a handful of vases in varying sizes and your table will be set in no time.

19 of 20

Keep it Oversized

Ashley Webb

The best centerpieces are ones that can hold down a dining room and help center it and finish your table setting. Opt for an oversized vase and blooms for a look that works best in a large room.

20 of 20

Fill a Runner

Black and Blooms

Sometimes a single centerpiece just isn't enough. First, lay down a runner. Then, fill it with air plants or candles. Finally, complete the look with a large bouquet in the center.

6 Design Professionals on Their Favorite Dining Tables

8 Design Professionals on Their
Favorite Dining Tables

Everything happens at the dining table: eating, working, talking, doing homework, catching up with friends…. No other piece of furniture knows you better. So buying a one is a big deal—in a good way. You want a table that is comfortable, makes you happy, and will stick with you for a long time. We asked eight design professionals for their picks—and added a few of our current favorites as well.

  • Kate Towill Black and White Headshot

    Kate Towill

    Founder, Basic Projects

  • "The dining table is very important to us—it is where we gather for wild dinners, homework, or morning coffee with the newspaper spread out. For me, the best dining tables get better with age and use and are made from materials that do just that."
  • ORGANIC MODERNISM Table Organic Modernism, $1,395 "This Ballerina Table from Organic Modernism was the first piece of furniture my husband, Ben, and I bought together when we moved in with each other in Brooklyn Heights. It's been with us since 2013, has lived both inside and out—and has gotten better with age."
  • ANOTHER COUNTRY Dining Table Another Country, $2,100 "I always look for something with simple lines that does not feel too precious. I love Another Country. It is out of the UK and has the most beautiful simple white oak tables. Simple is oftentimes harder to find than you would think."
  • Kyle Hoff Black and White Headshot

    Kyle Hoff

    Cofounder and CEO, Floyd

  • "The table might just be the single most important piece of furniture in the home because it's a piece of furniture that's also a place where we gather, share our favorite meals, spill wine, eat leftovers, and take a moment."
  • FLOYD Table Floyd, $655
  • FLOYD Table Floyd, $595 "To create a piece for such a special place, we made sure our table would be the highest quality. The Floyd Table uses an all-natural linoleum surface material that is silky smooth to the touch but incredibly durable. Add that to real birch and steel, and you've got a simple, elegant, modern table that, we say, goes with anywhere."
  • Meyghan Hill black and white Headshot

    Meyghan Hill

    Principal, (wh)ORE HAüS STUDIOS

  • "A dining table is such a statement piece for a home, but, first and foremost, it needs to be functional and comfortable. What I love is an innovative mix of materials and pieces that are handmade by independent designers. These are both elegant and luxe while managing to be a little dark and edgy at the same time."
  • KELLY LAMB Table Kelly Lamb, price upon request "Kelly is an amazing artist also based in Los Angeles. I am obsessed with all her work, but this dining table, in stained oak with copper inlays, is my absolute favorite."
  • (wh)ORE HAÜS Dining Table (wh)ORE HAÜS, price upon request "I get a sense for an individual's aesthetics when I see what they have chosen for their dining table. For this piece, the owners already had two of my Daniel side tables and were enjoying them enough to ask me to make a dining table version. I hand-make all my pieces, which makes them easily customizable with, say, a wood top rather than marble or a different metal finish."
  • Krista Schrock and David John Dick Black and White Headshot

    Krista Schrock
    and David
    John Dick

    Principals, DISC Interiors

  • "There a few main points we look for when selecting a dining table," says Schrock. "The first is scale and function: How many people do we want to seat and is there enough space between the legs to accommodate this? And second, we look for tables with beautiful yet durable materials. We like mixing a stone top with a wood base, or a wood top with a metal base. We also love all-wood tables, too."
  • POLIFORM Table Poliform, price upon request "This table is fantastic because it has a sleek, modern Italian vibe but works in all types of homes. The top comes in a great selection of white, brown, and black stones, as well as a wood top."
  • CROFT HOUSE Dining Table Croft House, $5,250 "We love this dining table because of the beautiful black Nero Marquina black marble top paired with the lightness of the bleached maple base. It's a great contrast that still feels grounded."

Danish Wishbone Dining Chairs

Danish Wishbone Dining Chairs

Natural Wishbone Chairs around White Tulip Table
The Glitter Guide

Wishbone chairs are a very popular addition to stylish homes around the world. These minimalist chairs have origins in Scandinavia, when in 1944, Danish designer Hans Wegner first designed this iconic chair form alongside furniture maker Carl Hansen. Wegner took inspiration for the design after studying traditional Chinese Emperors' thrones. The chair was called CH24 originally, and is sometimes referred to as the Y-chair. The wishbone-shape on the back of each chair is how this chair earned its colloquial name.

Since its creation, this simple and functional chair has become an emblem of contemporary Nordic home design. Although the wishbone chair is a staple of modern Scandinavian home decor, the chair has now gone mainstream and can now be found in a wide variety of homes. In fact, the chair has stood the test of time and has been in continuous production since its initial release.

You can find wishbone chairs most commonly in the dining room, but they can also be easily used as desk chairs or accent chairs. The chair comes in a variety of colors, but in order to stay true to the design, we recommend opting for a more natural color like beige or brown. While the original wishbone chair will run you close to $600, all the other chair styles we selected below will not break the bank, and most come in at less than $200 each.

Wishbone Chairs

In case you're wondering how to style this classic chair, we've rounded up several of the most inspiring rooms featuring wishbone chairs to give you some ideas.

The Best Tips Laminate Flooring

CC0/Masrobo/Pixabay

Laminate, which is also known as "floating floors" have come a long way since their original inception in their 1970's. Their design is meant to depict floor tiles or wood flooring and, when high-quality materials are in use, it's difficult to tell the difference at first glance. Choosing the best laminate flooring and installing it with precision helps with its incredible look and lasting durability.

How to Pick Laminate Flooring

Choosing laminate flooring depends on where the installation occurs, the room's décor, and your overall taste. For example, if you're replacing the flooring in a living room featuring modern décor, selecting flooring featuring a light tone is optimal. However, if you're working on renovations in a bedroom depicting traditional themes, lean toward golden or darker hues. Those who are switching out the flooring in bathrooms or kitchens, laminate flooring reminiscent of stone or tiles is an excellent choice, but wood is also beautiful.

Where to Find Laminate Flooring

High-quality laminate flooring is available in a broad range of styles and designs. You'll find this flooring not only featuring a myriad of colors and plank widths but also grain styles and stone choices. If you look at places like Costco laminate flooring, you'll get a bargain, but you may be sacrificing quality. Shopping online or overseas, like from a German laminate flooring, for example, doesn't afford you the opportunity to look at the materials. If you do decide to shop online, look for dealers you can trust like Unilin laminate flooring or Krono laminate flooring, for example.

Look for Durable Materials

Think about how much traffic the room you're working on receives. For example, if you're replacing flooring in the living room where the main entrance is, a lot of foot traffic is going to come through that door. Therefore, the utilization of high-quality and durable laminate flooring is critical. Otherwise, you'll begin seeing wear spots in the high-traffic areas within the first few years of use. If you're replacing flooring in the kitchen or bathroom, make sure you select flooring that's resistant to spills and can handle frequent exposure to moisture.

About Laminate Flooring Installation

If you don't have experience with flooring installation, it's best to work with a professional. Otherwise, it's possible to install this flooring using a compass, drill, drill bits, hammer, flooring nailer, measuring tape, pry bar, rubber mallet, wood spacers, and table saw. Under most circumstances, laminate flooring comes with installation instructions, but you have to make sure you have tools ready to use. If you select discontinued laminate flooring, check with the dealer to ensure installation guidelines are available.
